The (Hot Wet Rock) HWR geothermal systems are suitable when there are permeable rocks or a localized systems of fractures, making use of the hot fluids found naturally in the basement rock. Care may be needed in managing the underground hot fluids to ensure corrosive or toxic waters are properly handled.
HWR reservoirs my be improved in performance via hydraulic fracking.
