Scientific Journal Publications

This section contains publications from scientific peer reviewed journals that are applicable to reducing green house gas emissions and fighting climate disruption. Articles in this section should preferably be from a reputable peer reviewed journal, reputable government source or academic institution. Blogs, magazine articles or pop. science expose do not belong here.

Climate Change Modeling

Trisos (2020) The projected timing of abrupt ecological disruption from climate change [1]
Summary - ?

Renewable Electric Grid Modeling

Jacobson (2019) Impacts of Green New Deal Energy Plans on Grid Stability, Costs, Jobs, Health, and Climate in 143 Countries [2]
Summary - This paper looks at a high level world model of an wind, water, and sunlight only electric grid, and the resources needed for 80% by 2030, and 100% by 2050.

Jacobson (2017) 100% Clean and Renewable Wind, Water, and Sunlight All-Sector Energy Roadmaps for 139 Countries of the World [3]
Summary -

Jacobson (2015) 100% clean and renewable wind, water, and sunlight (WWS) all-sector energy roadmaps for the 50 United States [4]
Summary - This paper looks at a medium granularity US model of 100% wind, water, and sunlight only electric grid. The paper identifies the amount of resources needed, and some novel technologies. The resource model is somewhat general and is a base to improve upon.

Clark (2017) Evaluation of Jacobson's proposal for reliable low-cost grid power with 100% wind, water, and solar [5]
Summary - A critique of Jacobson's 2015 US WWS paper. Modeling areas that can be improved are identified.

Renewable Energy Grid Resources

CSP

NREL (2017) Concentrating Solar Power Gen3 Demonstration Roadmap [6]
Summary - An NREL roadmap of concentrated solar power development, with future cost points and review of emerging technology (Molten Salt, Falling Particle, Gas Phase).

NREL (2018) CSP Systems Analysis - Final Project Report [7]
Summary - Primarily a review of pricing, properties and technology of different CSP systems.

Hybrid CSP

Powell (2017) Hybrid Concentrated Solar Thermal Power Systems: A Review [8]
Summary - Summary - A review of hybridization techniques used with concentrated solar power (CSP).

Korzynietz (2016) Solugas – Comprehensive analysis of the solar hybrid Brayton plant [9]
Summary - Detailed description of a 4.6MWe solar-hybrid gas turbine. CSP pre-heats air for the inlet of a gas turbine resulting in less gas usage.

Parrado (2016) 2050 LCOE (Levelized Cost of Energy) projection for a hybrid PV(photovoltaic)-CSP (concentrated solar power) plant in the Atacama Desert, Chile [10]
Summary -

Heat Engines

Carlson (2017) TECHNO-ECONOMIC COMPARISON OF SOLAR-DRIVEN SCO2 BRAYTON CYCLES USING COMPONENT COST MODELS BASELINED WITH VENDOR DATA AND ESTIMATES [11]
Summary - Contains pricing and performance information on sCO2 Brayton cycle engines.

Sandia (2018) sCO2 Brayton Cycle: Roadmap to sCO2 Power Cycles NE Commercial Applications [12]
Summary - Contains a detailed review of laboratory commercialization research efforts into SCO2 Brayton cycle engines.

High Voltage DC Transmission

ICF Inc. (2018) Assessing HVDC Transmission for Impacts of Non‐Dispatchable Generation [13]
Summary - Provides an assessment of the potential for High‐Voltage Direct Current Transmission to mitigate impacts of non‐dispatchable generation technologies.

Other

NREL (2013) Land-Use Requirements for Solar Power Plants in the United States [14]
Summary - Provides statistics on the ratio of land to power generated for different solar generation technologies.

Regenerative Farming and Biomass

Biomass

Finnan (2013) Hemp: A more sustainable annual energy crop for climate and energy policy [15]
Summary -

Schmer (2015) Sub-surface soil carbon changes affects biofuel greenhouse gas emissions [16]
Summary - Analyzes significant impact of "sub-surface(>30cm)" biomass when calculating soil organic carbon for GHG life-cycle assessment.

Industrial

Turcheniuk (2018) Ten years left to redesign lithium-ion batteries [17]
Summary - Describes serious limitation in reserves of cobalt and nickel reserves for meeting future battery demand.
