350 Santa Fe Global Warming Resource Wiki

In early 2020, the 350 Santa Fe Chapter embarked on a project to capture their volunteers' notes on a wide variety of subjects aimed at understanding the full nature of the climate crisis (aka Global Warming), possible solutions, and the resources that activists might need to call on to make a difference. Visitors are welcome to browse this content, follow the extensive links to other materials and provide feedback via our website contact form.

Occasionally, as a visitor you will see TODO to indicate that our research is incomplete and more information is needed on a subject. A Slow Crisis in the Making

The Problem

The world’s scientists confirmed in the 2018 IPCC report that at the current rate, the world could cross 1.5˚C hotter as soon as 2030. That’s only a decade from now, well within the lifespan of most people alive today.

1.5˚C might not sound like a big increase in temperature, but it’s the difference between life and death for thousands of people.

Earth has always had natural cycles of warming and cooling, but not like we’re seeing now. The top five hottest years on record are 2016, 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2014.

And rising temperatures doesn’t only mean it’s getting hotter. The Earth’s climate is complex — even a small increase in average global temperature means big changes, with lots of dangerous side effects. (Src: 350.org)

Why is it 350?

Climate scientists in 2008 with NASA Goddard Institute suggest that global policies should have an initial target for atmospheric CO₂ of 350 ppm. They note that the optimum CO₂ level for maintaining a planet similar to that on which civilization developed is likely to be less than 350 ppm, but a 350 ppm target already reveals that dramatic policy changes are needed urgently. By the time such fundamental changes are achieved, knowledge will exist to help fine-tune the target CO₂.

CO₂ levels are monitored by NOAAA at the Mauna Loa Observatory, Hawaii.

Resilience May Be An Option

Given the enormous effort involved in actually reversing global warming, experts and scholars are also thinking about the best ways to cope with some of the worst effects. Resilience is like the energies we put into surviving plane crashes. Yes we need emergency exits, escape chutes and emergency responders on the ground. But it is better to avoid a crash in the first place and that is where we spend most of our resources on airline safety.

The Paris Accord between member states produced a “Global Goal on Adaptation” (GGA) with the aim of “enhancing adaptive capacity, strengthening resilience and reducing vulnerability to climate change, with a view to contributing to sustainable development and ensuring an adequate adaptation response in the context of the global temperature goal” (cited in Singh, Harmeling and Rai, 2016). Countries are committed to developing National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) and report on their creation to the UN.

“Years of Living Dangerously”

This series, featuring celebrity correspondents like Matt Damon and Olivia Munn, is a favorite of the climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe. Not only because it discusses climate impacts and solutions, but also because it tackles two huge myths: first, that climate change is a “distant issue,” and, second, that we can only fix climate change by “destroying the economy or our personal liberties.”

“Merchants of Doubt”

If you’ve ever wondered how the climate debate became, well, a debate, then this intriguing and infuriating film is for you. Based on a book by Naomi Oreskes and Erik M. Conway, it draws a parallel between the tactics of Big Tobacco and Big Oil, revealing the world of politics, spin and public opinion.

“Mission Blue”

Besides highlighting the work of the oceanographer Sylvia Earle, a National Geographic explorer-in-residence, this film also paints a picture of the devastating changes she has witnessed during her decades underwater. Xiye Bastida, a 17-year-old activist and organizer for Fridays For Future NYC, said it “shows the power we have as individuals to connect with nature and speak for nature.”

“This Changes Everything”

Inspired by Naomi Klein’s 2014 book of the same name, this documentary “aims to empower,” rather than scare, viewers into action. “The film tells moving, personal stories,” said Keya Chatterjee, executive director of the U.S. Climate Action Network, “but weaves them into a larger story about how colonialism and greed got us into this crisis, and also how people-power and disruption will get us out.”

“Racing Extinction”

Unless drastic changes are made, some biologists estimate we could lose up to 50 percent of Earth’s species within the next century. That devastating fact — a potential sixth extinction, wherein “humanity has become the asteroid” — is the basis for this fast-paced, wide-ranging film from Louie Psihoyos, who won an Oscar for “The Cove.” While some scenes are tough to watch, they’re balanced with awe-inspiring nature shots that showcase a world worth saving.
